The design question
Agentic retrieval can be useful when a task requires adaptive information gathering. It also introduces more decisions to evaluate. Compare it with a simpler retrieval flow rather than assuming greater autonomy always improves the experience.
How to assess relevance
Identify a specific workflow and an accountable owner. Establish a baseline for quality, review effort, reliability, and cost. Compare the proposed pattern with a simpler alternative using representative cases and explicit failure scenarios.
What to ask before adoption
- Which business decision or operational task becomes easier to perform?
- What sources, permissions, and version dependencies shape the result?
- Which failures require escalation, and who owns recovery?
- How will usefulness and operating cost be measured after deployment?
